Speaking with GameSpot, Tobias mentioned that there was a reason why they chose to accept the joint deal with Koch Media.

We had several discussions simultaneously first. In the end, we trust Koch Media as a partner or publisher for Playday 3. They have a passion for games and the games as-a-service model. In addition, Koch Media is very open in this regard and ready to contribute to Starbreeze and the community of course.

Furthermore, Tobias also commented on the amount of funds provided by Koch Media to be able to release Payday 3.

This means a lot to Starbreeze of course. With this deal, Payday 3 can be released and the team can be even more calm. Of course we will focus on developing this game so that it can be even better

Tobias continued

According to him, they estimate that the total investment they can make during the 18 months since the game’s release could reach 50 million Euros or more.

We have the necessary resources to make this game. Of course, there will be content that will be released that the community will definitely like. In addition, the development of Payday 3 allowed us to innovate towards the game as-a-service model.

Starbreeze Studios acquired the full rights to the Payday franchise from publisher 505 Games in 2016. At the time, Starbreeze promised that the 505 would receive a third of all Payday 3 sales revenue once the developers recovered development and marketing costs.

Unfortunately, in the years that followed, Starbreeze got into trouble and the company’s finances began to fall apart. Overkill’s The Walking Dead, which should have been a boon for Starbreeze, had to be withdrawn following bad reviews in 2018.

In fact, Starbreeze had to sell publishing rights to games like Psychonauts 2 and System Shock 3 to survive. Unfortunately, former CFO Sebastian Ahlskog was also convicted of human trafficking in 2019.
