Western Digital Corp. (NASDAQ: WDC) announced today that the company has started shipping its fourth generation helium-based drives with 12TB HGST Ultrastar® He12-branded drives. The Ultrastar He12 12TB hard drive is an award-winning, next-generation high-capacity enterprise storage device with HelioSeal technology, providing customers with a data storage solution that addresses the growing information management and performance demands of enterprise, cloud and large-scale workloads. .

Ultrastar He12 Helium HDD
Renowned for its high quality, the Ultrastar He12 enterprise-class HDD features the industry’s first eight-disk design, to deliver 12TB of capacity using PMR technology on a standard 3.5-inch form factor. This is the highest capacity drive for active random workloads. Leveraging Western Digital’s unique HelioSeal process which stores helium in the hard drive to provide the highest capacity HDD and exceptional power efficiency, the Ultrastar He12 HDD comes with a single 12TB capacity and offers a SATA or SAS interface both using the Advanced Format. HelioSeal technology utilizes helium at 1/7 the density of air, enabling the use of thinner discs while maintaining a stable recording interface.
The unique Ultrastar He12 HDD design features eight disks, two more than the highest capacity air-based enterprise drives, allowing for an increase in capacity to 12TB, 50 percent more than the highest available air-based enterprise drives. The additional capacity available is for increased storage device density, reducing the need for associated data center infrastructure to store large amounts of data. The device is also designed to be low-power without compromising performance, which helps reduce the overall cost of ownership. The Ultrastar He12 HDD is perfect for any application that requires a high-capacity, cost-effective storage device.
